the five years since Afzal
Guroo was hanged and buried inside
Tihar Jail without informing his family,
his son Galib has passed two Board
examinations with distinction, and his
widow
has constructed her
own house in Baramulla, though it is still
incomplete. As they wait, and struggle,
for a better life, the mother and son
continue to await the return of Afzal’s
mortal remains.
KR, Tabassum said that her
husband’s remains can be given to her
if the government of Jammu and
Kashmir asks the Indian government for
them. But, she added, the government of
Jammu and Kashmir consists of people
who live for themselves, with no
concern for common people.
Tabassum spoke to KR at the old house
where she lived with Afzal, at Jagir
Sopore. “As it is the fifth death
anniversary of my husband (on February
9), I reached my husband’s home three
days before to see the guests who visit
for Fatehakhwani (special prayers).
Despite the curbs and restrictions, many
people visit the home every year to
offer condolences and special prayers,”
she said.
